I still think I have a good basic point in this
article. While I don't object to the ideas behind ______ History Months,
it has really unfortunate implications for the rest of the months. Ideally
these months should not exist because we should be honoring these histories
all year long.
I actually did get zinged a little bit over this article. I was running late to a class one day and the professor told me "You know, if you're going to write in the paper that you're a student of history, then you should be on time."
I've become a fan of the Nickelodeon cartoon "The Fairly OddParents!" Even though the show is marketed to kids, many of its jokes are targeted to adults, much like shows like "Animaniacs". In one episode, due to one of Timmy's wishes, everyone became identical featureless grey blobs, and yet some of the blobs found reasons to consider other blobs inferior because they were supposedly less greyer and less blobbier. That's the same point I made about racism.
In my discussion of how many majority groups I was in, I considered adding the line "Boy, if I wasn't overweight and lower class, I'd just be pure evil!" but decided to cut it before submission. And of course, I am now out of the 18-35 demographic, which makes me a little less evil.
