A voice recording program. . .
Me and my sister both have a bit of an acting flair and we were considering undertaking a fun project: Recording a book using our computer. I was thinking that if I'm going to take the time to record a book on tape (It takes ALOT longer than you'd think.) then I'd want to be able to layer sound (maybe compose a piano song and play it in the background), cut out any portion of the recording I didn't want, I'd want to be able to insert any sound clip into the recording, and I'd want to be able to record it onto a cd. I know I'd need a cd rewriter to record it onto a cd, but can any of you suggest a recording program that would be capable of doing the above (and if you could give me a ball park estimate on what it'd cost?) Thanks a million for any help you can offer!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. In a word: GoldWave. A license costs $45, but it's well worth it. The evaluation version is absolutely free to try, though it has a "toll counter" which lets you excecute 150 commands before you have to close and restart the program (which can be somewhat annoying). Take a look; hope it helps! ^_^

It might be a while though. Free time has been a bit of rare creature as of late.

I once tried to record Lewis Carrols "The Hunting of the Snark" onto .wav files (aaah, the days before MP3s) but I turned out to be so extremely perfectionistic that it took about a day to record the first "Fit" ("Snark" is an agony in Eight fits...go figure). I went about the poem one line at a time, re-recording it over and over and over until I abandoned it because my audio equipment (a stupid little microphone that came free with the PC) was insufficient. And it was time consuming.
Still I enjoyed doing it.

Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge is a really good program for that sorta thing, i'm not sure how much it costs, We got it free from our College & University.
Its got tons of stuff like Effects, Dynamic processing, cut/paste/duplicate sections use of playlists to remix tracks without changing the original waveform, etc. Its Top Notch
