My idea...

Postby Voltz » Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:56 am

hello all i would like to present a new idea that i had. i noticed that deviantart is not "good for your soul". it has its good people and wonderful art but too much "content" i was thinking of us working on a not exactly exclusively christian, but clean artist environment.

personally im very tired of yaoi and yuri and i've had enough of the "artistic nude" aka PORN on the front page. as a christian thats trying to live according to scripture i cant afford to have all this enter muh system. im not that strong yet.well with a name like deviantart what can you expect but devious people. BUT being devious can also be good, WAIT KEEP READING I SHALL EXPLAIN. devious means to curve from the norm, and it's good to stray away from the norm BUT not from our good standards.

anyways if you know you would like to help we should try to make a new thread and start planning.tell me what you think about this idea though .

Why not just turn the DA mature content filter on if it bugs you that much... that would block quite a bit of what you just mentioned. I also rarely see aforementioned content on the front page... but maybe thats just my luck... my link is set to send me directly to my list of new art, so I don't see it as often as some people do.

agreed. Also, artistic nudes, like figure study and stuff is not porn. I just had to throw that out there.

In his defense, (and kindly recall that I normally defended artistic nudity) a fair amount of DA 'artistic nudity' is indeed borderline porn. I keep the filter off normally, because I don't want to miss something of quality, but I've been pretty appalled from time to time.

Anyhow, not against the idea, but not sure if it has a very high success potential. Artists and creative types tend to balk at moral guidelines and censorship. I'm struggling with this with a site I'm setting up (details to come later, when I'm ready for primetime. And no, it isn't an artwork board) because I want to make it clear it is strictly for PG and down content, but I don't want to drive contributors away by making them think I'm some sort of moral policeman. I'm just trying to be sure the site is appropriate to its core demographic (teenage readers.) So I'm struggling over the guidelines right now.

Strange, I very rarely (read: never) see anything pornographic on DA. Then again, I use the content filter, so the most I do see are artistic nudes/figure drawings, which, as Savannah said, are not porn. This topic has been covered extensively in another thread which I can certainly link if you'd like to browse it. Regardless, my advice is to turn on the filter. Truth is, you'll find distasteful art at nearly any art board/gallery/what have you; the important thing is that you keep yourself in check by producing art that glorifies God and by not looking at the items with mature content.

Also, bear in mind that CAA's Image Gallery is always open for uploads. XD

Also, why would only limiting our artwork to CHRISTIAN boards do anyone any good? I mean, part of the reason why I am on DA, is because I would like to think that any Christian influence in a secular board is better than nothing... ._.

I mean.. I hate isolationist media...where Christians only limit their talents to other Christians.

As far as the semi-porn on DA, I admit that even with my content filter on, some people don't mark their work as Mature... so I'll defend Volt on that too. :/ The content filter only works if the person marks their artwork as mature.

But I'm also with Savvy and Corrie. Artistic nudity can be a very beautiful form of artwork, provided that it's not pornographic. And drawing nudes can be very advantagious when it comes to learning the human anatomy. ^_^

(although I don't do it except for when I'm in art class, simply because I don't want people looking over my shoulder and saying "OMG I THOUGHT U WERE CHRISTIAN WHY U DRAWIN DAAAT!"

With the new ratings system there should be, at the minimum, warnings on everything along those lines if the people are even mildly courteous.

I do wonder how one would even prevent mature content from being posted on another art site if one was made anyhow... someone would have to look at it at some point, so I see maybe a flicker through a thumbnail on DA as being minor in comparison to having to moderate an entirely different art board (think about it... you'd have to look at EVERY POST to meet the standards you guys are imposing)... you can ask any of the CAA staff members about how fun deleting image posts HERE can be, let alone trying to filter a whole image board or art site, if it gains any sort of popularity.

QFT, I speak from experience. XD

Unfortunately. XD

Truth is, bad images can pop up anywhere. And I would hate to see a troll wave on a "Christian" art site. Shudder.

Especially if said site is against all forms of nudity... thats a lot of ammo to throw and a lot of ...milder stuff one could lump in on top of the really bad stuff to just slow down cleanup. I could also imagine that the site would probably become trollbait due to the strict rules (as CAA often is).

What, did you not consider that people would disagree with you? This is how online discussion forums work. We discuss things. If you have a case to make, make it. Interact. If you weren't looking to discuss this idea and possibly have it challenged/questioned, why did you bring it up in such a venue?

Yeah. eh... Though I'll usually stand up in defense of artistic nudity, sometimes it really does just seem like on DA it was an excuse to get pictures of a naked lady. But yeah... Saying we're closed minded?

The only "closed" thing here is this thread. This really doesn't need to carry any further, and there are already other topics open about this very subject. Degrading a conversation to mudslinging is never the best way to take a topic, though.
