Put those pitch-forks down! No one go nuts and try to chase down DjNoz either...he's a good Brit. And Shatterheart, no blowing up the forums again (all you old members remember this?)

The God Bless America movie...neat! Also, there is one stellar ecard in Dayspring's Fourth of July section, it's the first flash card in the list. Man, it's like a history lesson in a box!

Happy Independence Day!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

happt 4th of july!

Here's a curious question.

Anyone know where the tradition of fireworks came from? I mean, I know the idea was Chinese to begin with, but I wonder how it came to be associated with the Fourth? Also, this was really interesting to me, but most of the men who signed the Declaration were killed, had their families destroyed, their homes burned, etc. Many of their wives died in prison, and most of them ended up peniless. Something to think about.

I think the fireworks represent the Brits firing rockets at us (a bit of mocking, i think). And yes, it is intereting that many of our founding fathers stood with nothing to gain and a lot to lose if they signed the Declaration of Independence...

Probably not (wrt to the rockets). The Chinese certainly used them for their own celebrations, as do many other countries. Up here, for example fireworks are always part of Canada Day and Victoria day celebrations. It's more likely that the spectacle of watching fireworks simply appeals to us, and a national celebration is a good excuse to put on a show.

Oh, and happy fourth.
