I remember the times I was the only one in the chat who'd ask chatty a question and get logical answers .

Can anyone use chat?
do you have to know at least one person?
can you just randomly go in when other people are talking?
Can you just randomly chime in to the conversation?
will it be akward?
I don't want to annoy anyone...
I worry too much perhaps?

-A user needs a certain number of posts to access chat. If you're not there already, you will be before too long.
-No. You might be more comfortable with people you know a bit, but it's not required.
-Yes. You can't tell from the outside whether it's dead in there or not, and merely entering isn't disruptive.
-Depends on the conversation. Just be polite, like you would in an ordinary offline conversation. ^^
-Probably not, if you know what people are talking about and don't try to force a conversation to get derailed. Again, just try to be polite and you should be fine.
-More than usual, but not a harmful amount.

Can anyone use chat?
Almost, a few people have been banned from chat without quite being completely banned.

In answer to the question you are not asking:
To enter the chat you need to be above a minimum post count. I don't remember what exactly the number is but you're more than halfway there.

No.

Yes.

Can you just randomly chime in to the conversation?
Yes, though you'll have to judge for yourself when doing so would be rude.

will it be akward?
Sometimes, no matter how long you're here, or how active you are, sometimes the chat will get awkward.

Just be polite and you'll do fine.

How long does it take before I don't have every post I make approved beforehand? Every post I've made so far has taken a whole day to be approved, so I can't post much :/

How long does it usually take before you can use the chat?

Does every post have to be approved first or is that just for newbies?

It's just for newbies. After you reach a certain minimum threshold you'll have access to both. For obvious reasons we don't disclose those numbers publicly, but I think you'll have noticed you have one of those privileges already.

Click on the button that says "User Control Panel" (Just under the Board Index which is just below the big "home" "Forum" buttons)
Then click on the button labeled "Profile"
Then click on the button labeled "Edit avatar"
Then follow the instructions in that tab.
