Brief Description:
Plot Summary: In 1711 AD, a small group of desperate alchemists cross the Atlantic Ocean for the New World of America. During their voyage, they accomplish what was thought an impossibility: a successful distillation of the fabled Elixir of Immortality. But this immortality does not come without strings, and after not even a day violence and sorrow breaks out aboard the once peaceful ship.

Fast forward to the 1930s, Prohibition Era America. The streets are filled with the unemployed and the basements and back alleys are busting with gangsters and mafiasco making a living their own way in these hard times. Ah, but if only it were so simple. Amidst the lead and liquor, a 300-year-old alchemist's plans to recreate that wondrous miracle elixir go awry when his supply is stolen by a couple of hoodlums, soon to be tangled in a web of easy-going mafia types and idiot thieves. Meanwhile, the transcontinental expression the Flying Pussyfoot sets out to leave Chicago for Manhattan in a single night, unaware of the dangerous passengers it carries in luxury and squalor, or the terrible monster that travels alongside it. Welcome to these noisy times. (summary taken from the submitted CAA review.

Baccano! So good they gave it an official exclamation point in its title. It does cause quite a ruckus in its own right. Set in America during the Prohibition era, this series filled with immortal alchemists, mafia families, and idiot thieves grabs you from the beginning and will never let you go.

The music especially suits the series well throughout. It starts with a loud, fast paced trumpet in its Opening theme and jumps around from slow blues on the piano, to tense violins and other string instruments.

Both the sub and dub of this anime are excellent.

Be warned, the violence in this anime is not for the faint of heart. It ranges from people being filled with bullet holes to one character's face dragging against train tracks. It's not a blood filled anime, but it doesn't pull any punches either.

The only theological themes that could cause concern would be the idea as well as the fact of immortality. It's a basic and important element in the story.

Since this anime is set during prohibition Era, there is some reference to alcohol and some characters do smoke. There is also occasional swearing in the series. both in sub and dub.

Baccano! is a series that can't be fully explained in simple text. It starts out blurry, but the longer you watch, the more you see details, discover secrets, and learn lessons. It's a wild ride, but well worth the journey.

Note on Theological Themes:
The alchemists obtain the Elixir of Immortality by "summoning" what they call a "demon". This being tells them outright that he is not a "demon" though and the "summoning ritual" they performed has no meaning/power. In the light novels it is further revealed that he is Spoiler: a very old alchemist, who learned too much.
