This anime first aired in Japan in fall of 2005, and ran until September of 2006. In the US it first aired in March of 2006 on the Adult Swim Network, and ran until the following year.

Because of the content of this anime, I wouldn't recommend this anime to anyone younger than 18 or 21 years of age. That's not to say that they couldn't handle it, but it definitely has its disturbing plot elements.

Blood+ is a spin-off series of the quite popular Blood: The Last Vampire movie. Only it takes the the main character, Saya and turns her around into a high school-age girl who has to battle bat-like creatures who feed on humans. Together, with her reliable companion Hagi, her two brothers Kai and Riku and members of the Red Shield organization. She strives to rid the world of these creatures to save the human race in this action-packed anime.

This anime is a spin-off of the original movie, Blood: The Last Vampire. It centers around the life of Saya, who is depicted in this version as a 16-year old girl(in appearance anyway) who is trying to live a normal life despite the fact that her memories are all but gone. Through a series of traumatic and revealing situations, she realizes that isn't just a normal girl. In fact she's a being known as Chiropteran, am immortal being similar to vampires.

But as soon as she realizes what she is, she also takes it upon her shoulders to to protect her family and friends from other creatures like herself. Aided by her faithful companion Hagi, her brothers Kai and Riku, and members of the Red Shield, she embarks on a journey to figure out the secrets of her past and how it relates to her future.

Overall, this anime is really intense and has a decent story. I was hooked from the very first episode. However, that's not to say that this anime is for everyone. There are some pretty dark scenes that took this anime in a direction that it probably didn't need to go. Unfortunately, those dark scenes are VERY central to the plot of the second season. So it is with that knowledge, that I can't recommend this title to anyone younger than the age of 18 or 21. Spoiler: As it does involve an implied rape scene. Other disturbing scenes include: Several immortal characters get impaled by spikes or weapons. These are characters who can live through them but it can still be pretty freaky. There are also severed limbs, decapitations, and lots of blood. And because some of the characters are from the military there is quite a bit of curse words.

If it weren't for all those scenes, however I'd be very willing to give this anime a solid score. The characters are fun and they really have character development.

The soundtrack is a delight for any music lover. Hans Zimmer had his hand in creating some of the music for it and it's very evident in some scenes. Hagi plays the cello and the music that is heard for when he plays is really lovely and a musical treat.

I have watched both the sub and dubbed version of this and while I prefer the dub both versions are very well done, I believe.

Overall, this anime has a very lovely theme: Family and friends are important no matter who you are. And there's a constant reminder of the term "Nankurunaisa" Which is a pretty uplifting saying. "It will all work out."

So if you're in the mood for a horror anime with a dash of romance, action and drama then I suggest this anime if you can handle freaky scenes. If you can't or are sensitive to them, then this anime is most certainly not for you.
