They Who Also Serve
by Dave Hines

This last Friday, I worked my last shift for the conceivable future at the Ryan Library Computer Lab. Other obligations intruded upon my time, and in my graduating year, I have to make sure that I only take on the responsibilities that I can fulfill. I do have a lot of fond memories of my times in the Lab, as well as during my first year here when I worked in the old Cafeteria. Sometimes, though, the experience was a little on the bitter side thanks to some rude customers.

As a preface here, I have to say that most customers have been great. However, as always, there is a slim minority of people that seem to have left their manners at home. I've long advocated an idea where all students should work a couple of weeks in a job considered by some to be "low prestige" such as the Cafeteria or the Physical Plant. The people who are usually rude are the people who have either never worked on campus or may even not need to work at all.

Try to remember that these people working are someone's friend, roommate or significant other. Just like you, they're students here and deserve the same respect that you feel entitled to. Don't get angry with them for a small mistake if you're really angry over how much homework you have. Don't blame them for the policies that their managers instituted. Don't assert your hilarity to Cro-Magnon "friends" by playing pranks on them.

Instead, smile at them. Ask them how they're doing. Use strange words like "please" and "thank you". I guarantee you that no matter what field the student is in, that's going to get you better service and make it a more pleasant working environment all around.

And for those of you in the service fields here on campus, my picture is right on top of this column. If I'm not living up to what I say, call me on it. If i am am in the wrong, I'll admit it. I, and many others, really do appreciate what you do, even if we are inconsiderate jerks sometimes. Keep up the good work.
