Commentary: Crossing The Orange Line

Ah, my first article. I don't know the exact date it was published, but it was about 3 1/2 years ago. I'm not sure exactly what possessed me to try to do this, other than the fact that I had the "Disneyland" philosophy of extra-curricular involvement at Point Loma: Try every ride once. My sarcasm and refusal to take much seriously shine through in this column, as well as the analysis of the issue while doing it. I'd like to think I got even better as time went by.

As to the subject matter, I wanted to try something that hadn't been talked about, concerned students, and that I could be considered neutral on. I've heard many students grouse about the R.A. spaces, and I've heard lots of "all-calls" (using the intercom to address the entire dorm) to announce that cars needed to be moved out of the spaces. I based my neutrality on the issue on the fact that I didn't (and don't) own a car myself.

An embarassing amount of lacked research turned up in response to this column. An anonymous letter informed me that the A.S.B. council did indeed have specialized parking in the form of being able to park in the main commuter lot despite not being commuters. When I was on the A.S.B. council the next year, I considered using the sticker I was entitled to as a prize for an activity, but didn't think it would be appreciated by Security. In addition, two of the dorms didn't even have R.A. parking.

A few of  the R.A.'s were upset at the very idea that someone would want to take away their parking space. Some even attempted to counter my statement that they did not need emergency parking. Some said that emergency situations do develop. It still seems farfetched to me.

The statement "At least, I have never had a violent disagreement with my roommate." was supposed to read "...that violent a disagreement...". While the first sentence is correct, the second would have been funnier.

I left Point Loma just as the parking structure was set up at the old SAB lot. Perhaps the parking situation is now better. As from when I left though, I still stand by the final conclusion of this article.
